  • "Drinking tea every day may be one of the easiest lifestyle changes you can make to significantly lower your risk of suffering a stroke," according to epidemiologist Lenore Arab of the University of California at Los Angeles.

  • The study discovered that the risk of stroke was lowered 21 percent among those who drank three cups of green tea a day compared with those who drank less than a cup of green tea per day.
  • Among the polyphenols in tea is a family of compounds called the flavonoids and among the flavonoids is a smaller group called catechins.
  • The catechins found in the greatest concentration in tea – and the one most studied for its health benefits – is EGCG.
  • In another study, when researchers induced stroke in gerbils, there was less damage to the brain when they were fed a tea polyphenol called EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate).
  • According to Purdue University researcher Mario Ferruzzi, the benefits of green tea are best when consumed often enough to keep the level of polyphenols in the blood high.
